A team of two workers places a large block of ice, approximately 3 by 5 feet in size, onto wooden frame skids using metal tools. The Dallimore ice building measured 100 by 100 feet and stood approximately 16 feet high. The ice house was constructed with 10-inch-thick walls insulated with sawdust. Each layer of stored ice was also covered in sawdust, allowing the ice to remain preserved for up to two years.
